Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
A full Schluter-system bathroom remodel in Fort Worth typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the size of the wet area, the condition of the subfloor, and which Schluter products the job calls for. The most common failure we see is not the Schluter membrane itself but a shower floor that was built without the full system, leaving water to find the one seam that was never waterproofed. What starts as a loose tile or a faint musty smell near the curb usually means water has been working behind the surface for months, and by the time you see it, the fix is a rebuild, not a patch. We stock Schluter KERDI membrane, KERDI-BOARD, DITRA underlayment, and matching Schluter trim profiles in our Fort Worth shop, and we install them every week.
If you have already opened up the wall or pulled a loose tile and found gray fleece-backed membrane behind it, you are in the right place. This guide covers which Schluter products fit which situations, what the realistic cost looks like in Fort Worth, and when a repair makes sense versus a full tear-out. And we should say this plainly at the start: Elmstead Remodeling Fort Worth is an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with Schluter Systems, but we have been installing their waterproofing products in Fort Worth bathrooms for years and know the product line well enough to order the right part for your specific build.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a family of products that work together, and the part you need depends on what failed. The three you are most likely dealing with in a Fort Worth bathroom are KERDI (the waterproofing membrane used over drywall, cement board, or a mud bed), KERDI-BOARD (waterproof foam panels used to build bench seats, curbs, and sills that are not load-bearing), and DITRA (the underlayment used on the floor outside the shower to prevent tile from cracking). If your shower is a prefabricated Schluter tray, the tray model number is printed on the underside, and the matching KERDI drain grate will have a finish code for the metal color.
Here is the compatibility gotcha we see most often in older Fort Worth homes: a contractor installed KERDI membrane over a custom mud pan, and years later the homeowner tries to swap in a Schluter foam tray from a big-box store. Those two systems do not share dimensions. The foam tray has a specific slope built in and only works with the matching Schluter drain body, while a mud pan was sloped by hand and needs a KERDI drain with an adjustable bonding flange. If the curb is foam, it is KERDI-BOARD and can be cut and replaced in pieces; if it is solid mortar, it has to come out with the pan. We also runs into Schluter KERDI-BAND failures at the wall-to-floor joint, which happens when the installer did not embed the band in thin-set with a 2-inch minimum overlap on both faces. In North Texas, where slab bathrooms are common, DITRA over concrete makes more sense than on a wood-frame second floor, and the fleece layer needs to be bonded with unmodified thin-set, not mastic, or it will not hold.
For trim and edge finishing, Schluter profiles like QUADEC, RONDEC, and SCHIENE carry model numbers that end in the finish code (for example, “-AT” for aluminum, “-B” for brushed nickel). If you are matching an existing profile in a bathroom that was tiled five or ten years ago, bring us the old piece; we can match the size and finish rather than put a new color against an old one.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Loose or hollow-sounding floor tiles outside the shower. This usually means the tile was set directly over a wood subfloor without DITRA, and seasonal movement in the Tarrant County climate has cracked the bond. The fix is pulling the tile, installing DITRA, and resetting.
- Persistent musty smell near the shower curb or bench. Water is collecting behind the KERDI because a seam was not bonded with KERDI-BAND. The smell will not go away with cleaners; the surface has to come off to find the wet seam.
- Soft or spongy grout at the wall-to-floor joint. This is the classic sign that water has been sitting at the bottom of the shower wall since day one. The wall membrane may be fine, but the floor joint was left unsealed.
- Staining or efflorescence on the tile face below the bench or niche. Water is migrating through the grout and mineral deposits are drying on the surface. That points to missing KERDI-BAND behind the tile in that area.
- Cracking grout lines in a straight vertical or horizontal row. This often follows a seam in the underlying substrate, meaning the substrate moved and the tile moved with it. If the substrate behind it is KERDI-BOARD, we can usually patch the board joint and retile just that section.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fort Worth, a full Schluter-system bathroom remodel lands between $9,000 and $28,000. That range is wide because the job changes dramatically depending on what has to come out. A full gut of an older bath with a cast-iron tub, a mud-bed floor that was poured in the 1970s, and walls that have water damage runs higher than a walk-in shower replacement where the framing is sound and we are only rebuilding the pan and replacing two walls. Here is what the line items look like on a typical mid-range job:
- Full bathroom remodel with Schluter KERDI shower, DITRA floor, new vanity, fixture set, and tile: $9,000 – $28,000
- Walk-in shower rebuilt with KERDI membrane, new pan, and KERDI drain: $4,500 – $12,000
- Tub-to-shower conversion using Schluter waterproofing: $3,500 – $10,000
- Shower pan replacement only (existing shower, new KERDI pan and drain): $3,000 – $8,500
- DITRA underlayment installation under a floor that cracked: typically folded into a floor retile, starting around $2,000
That price includes the parts, the tear-out, the prep, the install, and the clean-up, which in our company means drop cloths on the floors, shoe covers at the door, and a photo of the finished cleanup before we leave. A written price is given before any work starts, every time. No estimate that grows after the crew arrives. And the job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things a Fort Worth homeowner can safely check before calling anyone. Look at the grout at the wall-to-floor joint under good light; if it has pulled away from the tile, that is information we need. Run a hand along the shower curb and tile face for soft spots, and peek inside the access panel if you have one. But once the conversation turns to removing tile or cutting into a shower pan, we recommend a trained professional. Waterproofing is not a part you can see working, and the failure of a membrane seam is something you only notice months later when the wood floor outside the bathroom starts to crown and the drywall on the far side of the wall bubbles. That repair costs more than the original waterproofing would have. If you are in Fort Worth and think you may have a Schluter failure, call (682) 708-9180. We will tell you what we think is happening and what it will cost to fix, with no obligation.
FAQs

A correctly installed Schluter KERDI shower in a Fort Worth bathroom should last the life of the tile, which is commonly 20 to 30 years with normal family use. The waterproofing does not wear out, but the tile surface and grout do, and North Texas’s clay soil movement can stress the substrate over time. Call (682) 708-9180 if you are seeing signs of moisture and want a straight assessment.
If the failure is caught early and localized, like a wet seam at the bench or a small KERDI-BAND failure, we can sometimes open a section, patch the membrane, and retile just that area. If water has been sitting for months and the subfloor or framing is damaged, a partial repair will not hold, and a full rebuild is the honest answer. The estimate we give you will tell you which situation you are in.
A typical full Schluter-system bathroom rebuild in Fort Worth takes 2 to 4 weeks from the first day of demo to the day the grout is sealed and the last piece of trim is set. A smaller shower-pan replacement is often done in 4 to 6 working days. We schedule noisy demo outside school-pickup hours when families are living in the house during the work.
We keep KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, DITRA, KERDI-BOARD, and a range of Schluter drain grates and trim profiles in stock at our Fort Worth shop. For less common finishes or nonstandard drain sizes, we order the part and give you the delivery date before any work is scheduled. If you are matching an older profile, bring in the old piece and we will match it rather than guess.
Alongside Schluter waterproofing, we install cabinetry from KraftMaid, and countertop surfaces from Cambria and Silestone, so the vanity and the shower are both done with named-brand materials you can research by name. The brands we use carry manufacturer warranties that travel with the finished project.
