James Hardie Windows & Doors: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
For Fort Worth homes with James Hardie siding and trim, the windows and doors built to integrate with that exterior need to be matched correctly. We stock and install James Hardie-compatible windows and doors, with typical installed pricing in Fort Worth running $4,500 – $15,000 for full window replacement and $1,200 – $4,800 per door depending on size, material, and the condition of the surrounding Hardie trim. Most owners discover a part has failed when they notice a window that no longer seals against the Texas wind, a door that catches on the threshold after a hard rain, or caulk lines around the Hardie trim that have cracked and pulled away from the frame. The failure is rarely the James Hardie board itself. It’s almost always the seal, the flashing, or the moving hardware.
We’re an independent Fort Worth contractor, not a James Hardie dealer or affiliate. That matters because we recommend the right part for the house, not the part that moves inventory.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie doesn’t manufacture windows or doors. The company makes siding, trim boards, and backer products. What Fort Worth homeowners call “James Hardie windows and doors” means the window and door openings finished with HardieTrim® boards, HardieSoffit®, or HardiePlank® lap siding around them. The compatibility problem is real: the depth of HardieTrim boards (typically 5/4″ or 1″ thickness) changes the reveal on the window or door jamb, and if the replacement window or door isn’t sized to that reveal, the finished opening will look wrong and leak water into the frame.
What we check on every Fort Worth job: the trim board thickness, the gap between the window flange and the Hardie board, and whether the original installer used the correct 1/8″ gap Hardie requires at all trim joints. We also confirm whether the opening uses HardieWrap® weather barrier or an older felt paper behind the trim, because that determines what flashing tape and sealant we order. OEM flashing from the window manufacturer is the right call on most installs. On older openings where the original flashing was nailed through the Hardie board itself, we pull and replace that board before the new window goes in.

Signs Your James Hardie Windows & Doors Are Failing
- Caulk cracking at the HardieTrim edge. Hardie boards expand and contract with Fort Worth’s temperature swings. The paint-grade caulk used ten years ago hardens, lets go, and then water sits against the trim edge and rots the window frame behind it.
- A window that sticks after a rainstorm. This is a flashing failure. Water is getting behind the Hardie trim and swelling the rough opening. The window itself is usually fine; the opening around it is failing.
- Visible nail heads popping through the trim board. The nails holding the HardieTrim to the framing have corroded loose. That movement is what cracks the caulk line and opens the gap to water.
- Door threshold gaps in winter, tight in summer. Fort Worth’s clay soil shifts seasonally. A door hung flush to Hardie trim in July will drag by February. The fix is often a properly flashed and sealed threshold, not a new door.
- Mold smell near a window or door baseboard. Water has been entering behind the trim long enough to dampen the framing. By the time you smell it, the window unit usually needs to come out so we can inspect what’s behind the Hardie board.

Every quote we write in Fort Worth includes the parts, the labor, the flashing, the sealant, the trim repair, and the cleanup. No line item appears on the final invoice that wasn’t on the written price. That’s the point of the written quote Graham Stein insists on before any crew unloads a tool. If the opening needs an extra board of HardieTrim or a different flashing profile than expected, we explain the difference before we touch it.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things a Fort Worth homeowner can safely do before calling us. Walk the exterior and look for cracked caulk lines at every Hardie trim joint. Run a bead of quality exterior caulk over any gap you find to keep water out until we arrive. That buys you weeks, not years. The second is checking the door threshold screws to see if they’ve backed out, which is common with our soil movement and often fixes a dragging door in five minutes.
What you should not do is remove the Hardie trim board around a window or door opening yourself. Those boards can be under tension, and the nails can be corroded enough that the board splinters and kicks back. More importantly, the flashing behind the board is layered in a specific order, and getting that order wrong means water runs into the framing instead of away from it. If you’ve got water damage behind the trim, call (682) 708-9180 and schedule a free estimate. We’ll open the wall only as far as needed, and we’ll show you what we found before we order any part.
FAQs

A correctly installed window or door opening with Hardie trim should stay weathertight for 20 – 30 years in the Fort Worth climate, but the caulk and flashing typically need attention every 7 – 10 years. The Hardie board itself can last 50 years. What fails first is almost always the sealant, then the flashing, then the rough opening framing.
In most Fort Worth homes, yes. If the HardieTrim board is intact and only the caulk or flashing has failed, we remove the old sealant, reset or replace the flashing, install a new backer rod, and re-caulk with a sealant rated for Hardie board movement. If the board itself is swollen, cracked, or nailed through improperly, we replace the board. Call (682) 708-9180 and we’ll tell you which situation you have after one look.
A single window or door replacement in Fort Worth usually takes one day, including the Hardie trim reset and new flashing. A whole-house window replacement takes three to five days depending on how much trim repair the openings need. We sequence the work so no opening is left unsealed overnight.
We stock the common profiles of HardieTrim, flashing tape, backer rod, and sealant on our trucks so a standard Fort Worth repair doesn’t require a second visit or a wait for a supplier. Custom trim profiles, specialty flashing for unusual opening depths, and some window and door units are ordered per job. If we’re quoting a replacement, the written quote tells you which parts come from truck stock and which are ordered.
