Wellborn Windows & Doors: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

If your Wellborn window or door has a failed hinge, a stripped operator, torn weatherstripping, or a lock that no longer catches, we match and install the correct replacement part, usually within one visit. Installed part replacement in Fort Worth typically runs $120 to $480 depending on the hardware type and how accessible the unit is. Most homeowners notice the problem the same way: a window that suddenly drops when opened, a door that drags against the frame, or a crank that spins without moving the sash.

We are Elmstead Remodeling Fort Worth, led by Graham Stein. We are an independent service provider in Fort Worth, not affiliated with Wellborn. What we offer is straightforward: a written price before any part gets ordered, background-checked technicians in your home, and a 365-Day Done Right Promise on the completed repair.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn has built windows and doors across several cabinet and millwork lines over the years, and the hardware spec changed between series. The most common compatibility issue we see in Fort Worth is the hinge style: older Wellborn units used a 3-bar friction hinge, while later series moved to a 4-bar stainless hinge with a different mounting hole pattern. They are not interchangeable, and forcing the wrong hinge is the fastest way to damage the frame extrusion.

Before calling, check the narrow aluminum strip on your window or door frame. Most Wellborn units carry a small etched series code, usually two letters followed by four digits, like WB-2104 or AS-3371. That code tells us the hinge spacing, the operator length, and the lock bore diameter without us having to guess. If the label is gone, we measure the visible glass size and the frame channel depth, which narrows the match to one or two possibilities.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Wellborn specifically, our honest position: OEM hardware is worth it for hinges and operators, because the screw hole locations match exactly and the metal is thicker than most aftermarket copies. For weatherstripping and glazing bead, a quality aftermarket equivalent usually performs the same and costs less. We will show you both options and the price difference before ordering anything.

Signs Your Wellborn Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The sash drops or won’t stay open. The culprit is almost always a worn friction hinge. Once the hinge loses tension, the window falls shut under its own weight, which then stresses the operator and lock.
  • The crank spins but nothing moves. Inside the operator housing, a small gear has stripped its teeth. This happens faster on south-facing windows in Fort Worth, where heat cycles make the internal grease dry out and the brass gear work harder.
  • You can feel air moving around the closed window or door. Weatherstripping compresses over time, especially on west-facing units that bake in the Texas afternoon sun. The seal looks fine until you run your hand along it on a windy day.
  • The lock is stiff or won’t throw completely. The lock strike may be misaligned from years of the sash settling, or the locking cam inside the handle has worn. Forcing it usually breaks the handle. If you have children, a lock that does not fully engage is the one we would not wait on.
  • The door drags or the reveal around it is uneven. On Wellborn doors, a sagging panel usually points to a tired hinge or a top pivot that has shifted. Left alone, the drag wears the threshold and eventually the frame.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our Fort Worth pricing is written down before any work starts, the same day we look at the unit. For a single window or door part swap, expect the following installed ranges:

  • Friction hinge replacement: $130 – $280 per pair, installed
  • Operator or crank assembly: $120 – $240 per unit, installed
  • Lock or handle set: $90 – $220 per set, installed
  • Weatherstripping replacement: $80 – $190 per window or door, installed
  • Full hardware refresh (hinges, operator, lock, seals): $320 – $480 per unit, installed

The range depends on the series your unit belongs to and whether we are doing one window or several. Multiple units in the same visit cost less per window because the trip and setup happen once. Every price includes the part, labor, disposal of the old hardware, and testing the unit through its full range before we leave. If the unit has a pet-safe or child-safe lock option available, we will offer it without upselling.

Every completed repair falls under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something about the repair is not right within a year, we come back and make it right. The written price and the final invoice should read the same, and if they ever don’t, that’s on us to explain before we hand you a pen.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: wipe the tracks clean, tighten visible handle screws, and note which side of the window or door is failing so you can describe it accurately. Those checks cost nothing and help us bring the right part on the first trip.

What we would not recommend doing yourself: removing a Wellborn window sash or door panel to reach a hinge. The sash on many Wellborn units is heavy and balanced, and once the hinge screws are out, the panel can drop suddenly. Door panels are worse, they pinch fingers fast and can damage the frame on the way down. High-tension hardware does not announce itself before it fails.

If the part is accessible and you are comfortable with basic tools, we are happy to sell you the part and talk you through it. But if the sash or panel has to come out, that is the moment to call us at (682) 708-9180. The estimate is free, and we will tell you honestly if it is a job you can handle.
